Charades

A family favorite, charades are a great way to get everyone laughing and having fun. Plus, it’s a great way to improve your acting skills! Here’s everything you need to know to get started with charades.

First, you’ll need at least two people to play. Each person will take turns acting out a word or phrase while the others try to guess what it is. You can make it as easy or complex as you want by setting a time limit, adjusting the number of clues, or making it a competition.

To start, you all need a list of charade words or phrases. You can find plenty of lists online or make your own. Once you have your list, you’re ready to start playing!

Never Have I Ever

This game is perfect for any party – whether you’re with close friends or meeting new people. Never Have I Ever is a great way to get to know the people around you and learn some embarrassing (and sometimes hilarious) stories. To play the game, each person takes a turn making a statement about something they have never done. For example, “Never have I ever gone skinny dipping.” Then, if anyone in the group has done the thing mentioned, they take a drink. The game continues around the circle until everyone has had a turn. This game is sure to get everyone laughing and talking. So next time you’re looking for great campfire games adults will enjoy, try Never Have I Ever!

Telephone – Campfire games adults will enjoy

The telephone game is a classic party game for groups of all sizes. The game is simple – one person starts by whispering a message to the person next to them, who then whispers the message to the next person, and so on. Of course, the message gets muddled as it’s passed along, resulting in hilarious miscommunications. My family also loves the game Telestrations, a variation of Telephone where you start with a word. The first person draws a picture of the word; the next person writes what they think the object is, then the next person draws that word, and so on.

Make me Laugh

This game is sure to get you laughing! The object of the game is to make the other player laugh. To do this, you can tell jokes, make funny faces, or do anything else you can come up with. The first player to make the other player laugh wins the game.

Cards Against Humanity – campfire games adults want to play

Another one to add to your list of campfire games adults will love is Cards Against Humanity. It is a popular party game that has been around for a few years. The game is simple – in each round, one player asks a question from a black card, and everyone else answers with their funniest white card. The player who asked the question then chose the most amusing answer, and the person who played that card got the point. Cards Against Humanity is an adult-only game, although there are kid-friendly versions now!

Heads Up

Heads Up is a phone app that is a fun twist on charades! One person holds the phone up to their forehead while the rest of the group acts out the word to get the person holding their phone to guess as many words as possible before time runs out. One of the most fun things about the app is that it will record the people acting out the clues so you can watch it back for lots of laughs after the round.

Murder/The Winking Assasin – Campfire games adults will love

Murder or The Winking Assasin has various names, but my family has been playing this in the dark at our lake house in New Hampshire for many years. One person is secretly selected to be the ‘killer’ while the other players decide who the killer is. An excellent way to do this is to have everyone draw a card and specify one card, like the Joker, that identifies the person as the killer.

Once the killer is assigned, you walk around, and the killer ‘murders’ other players by winking at them. That person must either count to 5 and pretend to die or leave the area. When someone thinks they know who the murderer is, they shout out, ‘I accuse.’ A second player needs to agree with the accusation. If they are correct, the round is over. If they are incorrect, the accuser is out, and the game continues.

Murder

My family plays the version called Murder. You need to have as many playing cards as you do players, but make sure you have an Ace, King, and Queen of one suit. The person who draws the ace is the murderer, the King is the Judge, and the Queen is the backup judge if the other judge should be murdered. Everyone walks around (we do it with the house completely dark), and the murderer touches someone to let them know they died, preferably when they are in a spot with no one else around to witness it. The person who was killed lies down on the spot.

You continue walking around until someone (other than the murderer) finds the ‘body’ and yells out, ‘MURDER!’. Then we turn on the lights and gather together. The appointed judge asks the group questions to determine who the murderer is, such as asking the person who found the body, who else they saw in that area, or where in the house someone was when the murder happened. After they’ve asked their questions, they accuse the person they think did it. If the person says no, they keep asking questions until they figure it out. Then the round is over, and you can draw new cards and play again!

Glow in the Dark Laser Tag

This isn’t exactly a sit-around-the-campfire game, but I had to add it because of how much fun my family has had playing laser tag. My sister bought laser tag guns for our family one Christmas, like these on Amazon. We had such a blast running around; it was so fun at night. The guns and vests glow, so you could even have a Glow night and deck yourselves out with glow sticks! It’s a fun game to add to your camping trip; just don’t run around near the bonfire!

Catch Phrase – campfire games adults can play

Electronic Catch Phrase is a great campfire game adults can play around the fire because it’s simple. All you need is the small handheld game! The object is not to be the last one holding the game. You will divide into teams by splitting up every other person in the circle. Once you press the button to start the timer, the person holding the game gives clues to get their team to guess the word or phrase on the screen. Once they get it right, the game is passed to the next person in the circle, and so on, until the timer runs out! The team left holding the game when the buzzer goes off loses, and the other team gets a point. The first team to 7 points wins!
